Community Waves: the free, ethical, social media for changemakers
Ready to expand your ripple waves of connection and regeneration? We are thrilled to invite you to Community Waves, our alternative social media platform!
Tired of big tech companies undermining our digital well-being, nasty algorithms, and persistent ads? So were we. That's why we've been building this new, open-source platform – a space owned by the community, for the community.
Hosted by Transition Network international (TNi), Community Waves offers some key features and benefits:
- It uses open source software (built with HumHub)
- It is powered by green energy
- Adverts-free
- No nasty algorithms in the house
- Not owned by questionable tech billionaires or big corporations
- User-friendly and responsive
- Network building: follow, connect and message other users
- You can write or read in your preferred language simultaneously thanks to an automated translations plug-in. No more language barriers!
- Public and private spaces, organised by topics and community type
- Supported by actual humans – got an issue or a question? Sam, Pame or Dan are around to help
- Improving as we go – your feedback is actually considered and it helps improving the platform and its tools

This alternative social media platform is easy to use, with accessibility features built-in, and has a similar look and feel to Facebook. There’s a direct messaging feature, a shared calendar, a members map, and more!
You won’t find algorithm-driven feeds, but an intentional space for the community to cultivate depth of connection.
Lately, our space has been buzzing with real conversations. Members are sharing project updates, workshopping challenges, and celebrating wins together. The discussions have been wide-ranging: we've explored facilitation techniques and educational approaches, dug into regenerative ways of communicating across organizations, and shared local strategies for responding to the rise of violent groups in our communities. And of course, we're collectively making sense of AI and what it means for our work today.

A bit of context
The first seeds of Waves were planted a while ago, and after a lot of research and testing we launched it officially by the end of 2025. You can watch the recording of the Choosing Ethical Technology webinar for more context here:
Choosing Ethical Technology webinar facilitated by Sam Rossiter and Esther Molina, part of TNi Comms team

Waves is open and offered for free to every user, independently of their organisation.
There is a simple Terms and Community agreement page available as user safety and participation guidelines.
We’re working now on a collective project for interoperability so this doesn’t become an echo chamber. Stay tuned for more.
If you are part of the Transition movement or a member of a sister organisation and your intention is to host a space in Waves, you’ll be able to use a specific link to bring your members to it once ready. Please check out our Waves slide deck here and contact our team via comms@transitionnetwork.org
